In this beginners yoga tutorial, you will learn how to do the Halfway Lift, (Halfway Lift in sanskrit is Urdvha Uttanasana). This is a basic yoga pose found in many different types of yoga classes like ashtanga vinyasa classes, yoga fitness classes, etc and has many different ways you can practice. Here, Jennifer talks about "best practices" you can do to help keep your back safe and pain free.
Key points to remember when practicing Halfway Lift Pose:
1) Your feet are typically toes together, heels slightly apart, if this isn't going to happen for you, you can also do feet hips width distance apart.
2) If your hamstrings and low back are open enough, you can have your hands flat on the mat on the outside of your feet, fingertips in line with your toes.
3) IF that isn't happening today--your hamstrings may be tight, or your low back, your can have your finger tips on the mat in line with your toes, your hands on your shins (just don't lock your knees) or your hands on your thighs. Don't press your hands on your knees in Halfway Lift pose.
4) Your gaze is slightly forward without over arching your neck
5)Your shoulders are pressing back and away from your ears, squeezing together behind you
6) Chest is proud, but don't stick your ribs out.
7) Your belly is IN (A LOT)
Remember, always keep your stomach muscles engaged and try not to tilt that tail bone out. (this cue can reduce back pain, and create more length in the hamstrings and low back) This is a great pose to build flexibility in your back body muscles.
